BIO
Patrick Thomas Ridge is associate professor of Spanish in the Department of Modern and Classical Languages and Literatures. He specializes in Latin American literature and culture, film and media studies, medical Spanish, and sport. His current research focuses primarily on the cultural portrayal of sport in Latin America and in the U.S. Latinx context. His forthcoming book, Fulboy: The Masculinist Myths of Soccer in Argentina and Brazil (University of Nebraska Press, 2026), argues that soccer and associated cultural production have historically embedded masculinist ideology. He has also published on the documentaries of World Cup ’78 in Argentina, homoaffectivity in the Mexican Netflix series Club de Cuervos, masculinity in Brazilian soccer films, and violence in contemporary Spanish cinema. His article "Thunder and Terror: Storm as Allegory in Tatiana Huezo's Tempestad" (Diálogo) was awarded the Adela Zamudio Essay Prize in 2021 by Feministas Unidas Inc. He has recently taught courses on Latin American documentary, experimental filmmaking, soccer, and Mexican and Central American literature and culture. With a background in medical interpretation, he also teaches Spanish for the Medical Professions. He earned his Ph.D. in Spanish from Arizona State University and M.A. from the University of Louisville.
