BIO

Alyssa Kuhns is a design educator and Registered Architect whose work mediates the scope of products, materials, interiors, and architecture. After receiving her Bachelor of Architecture from Carnegie Mellon University, Alyssa worked as a Project Manager for a Pittsburgh-based Design-Build firm. She went on to receive her Master of Industrial Design at Pratt Institute before becoming the inaugural Interior Architecture Fellow at the University of Tennessee Knoxville. There, her fellowship research focused on Domestic Dualities, investigating the discrepancy between real and idealized domestic space.

Prior to joining the faculty at Virginia Tech's Washington-Alexandria Architecture Center, Alyssa held appointments at the Fay Jones School of Architecture and Design at the University of Arkansas and Auburn University. Her teaching centers on fundamental design concepts and methodologies across beginning design studios, lecture courses, and advanced research seminars and has been presented at ACSA and NCBDS conferences. Her research is also focused on foundational design elements of everyday spaces and investigates the relationship between products, materials, and spatial experience, specifically in the domestic realm.
