BIO

Flutist Elizabeth Lantz is Associate Professor of Practice in the School of Performing Arts at Virginia Polytechnic Institute and State University (Virginia Tech). A versatile performer and educator, she has appeared as a soloist and chamber musician across the United States and internationally, with engagements in South America, Canada, Europe, the Baltics, South Korea, and the Caribbean. Recent engagements include a regional recital tour of the Mountain West, featured performances and masterclasses at the 2025 College Music Society International Conference in Bogotá, Colombia, a residency at the IX Festival Internacional de Percusión y Sonido e Imagen at the Universidad Industrial de Santander in Bucaramanga, Colombia, and lectures and recitals in Rome, Milan, and Brescia, Italy, with collaborative pianist Dr. Shannon Wettstein.

Elizabeth’s creative practice centers on contemporary music, interdisciplinary collaboration, and the integration of technology. Her recent creative work includes the premiere of The Fluted Bird for amplified flute and computer by Charles Nichols, a project supported by Virginia Tech’s Institute for Creativity, Arts, and Technology (ICAT) and McGill University’s Centre for Interdisciplinary Research in Music Media and Technology (CIRMMT). She has also performed at the New Music and Technology Festival at Virginia Tech and the New Music Festival at the University of Nebraska Omaha. Other commissions and world premieres include collaborations with pianist Dr. Shannon Wettstein featuring works by Virginia Tech School of Performing Arts faculty Dr. Charles Nichols, Professor Eric Lyon, and Dr. Dwight Bigler.

Committed to expanding the flute repertoire, Elizabeth actively commissions and premieres new works. In 2015, she co-commissioned Wish Sonatine by GRAMMY-nominated composer Valerie Coleman with pianist Dr. Richard Masters. Inspired by a poem by Fred D’Aguiar and funded by Virginia Tech’s College of Liberal Arts and Human Sciences Diversity Committee, the work premiered at the National Flute Association Annual Convention in Washington, D.C. Wish Sonatine has since entered the standard repertoire and is widely performed in competitions and recordings.

Elizabeth is also active in community outreach and arts advocacy. She serves on the board of the NRV Friends of the Roanoke Symphony Orchestra, where she coordinates the SMILES educational concert series.

Originally from Phoenix, Arizona, Elizabeth holds a Master of Music from the University of Southern California and a Bachelor of Music from the University of Arizona. Her principal teachers include Ann Diener-Zentner, Jim Walker, Tadeu Coelho, and Jean-Louis Kashy. She lives in Christiansburg, Virginia, with her husband, Charles, and their three dogs, Gemma, Cooper, and Ollie.
